The following is a transcript of my interview with the Honourable Paul Hellyer, former Minister
of Defence and Deputy Prime Minister of Canada.

Right Honourable Paul Hellyer. Now, Paul Hellyer is Canada’s senior Privy
Councillor…he’s been appointed to the Cabinet of Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent in
1957…just 8 years after his first election to The House of Commons in 1949 at the age of
25. He subsequently he held senior posts in the government of Lester B. Pearson and
Pierre Elliott Trudeau who defeated him for the Liberal Leadership in 1968. Now, the
following year after achieving the rank of Senior Minister which was later designated
“Deputy Prime Minister.” Mr. Hellyer resigned from the Trudeau cabinet on a question
of principle related to housing. Now, although Mr. Hellyer is best known for the
unification of the Canadian Armed Forces and for his 1968 chairmanship on the taskforce
