Awakening From
Disasters
zu Chi’s Emergency and Disaster Relief program is one of the
cornerstones of the organization, with operations spanning both
T domestically and internationally. In 2015 alone, Tzu Chi distributed
$686,800 in cash cards, 2,055 eco-blankets, and 155 packs of instant
rice to 2,836 families affected by disasters. When Typhoon Soudelor
destroyed hundreds of homes and left the island of Saipan without
power for several weeks, Tzu Chi and its partners, Red Cross and Edison,
sent pots and pans to families that lost their homes to cook without
electricity. Tzu Chi’s USA chapter provided mass care items, financial,
and emotional support to families affected by natural disasters, such as
the Valley Fire, which destroyed much of Lake County in California, and
the Garland Tornado which left thousands homeless in the small town
in Texas. In each of the 36 cases in 2015, volunteers arrive on scene with
eco-blankets and individual cash cards to help the affected get back on
their feet. Whenever a natural disaster strikes, wherever it may be, Tzu
Chi volunteers follow closely behind, helping the disaster-affected in
their time of vulnerability and adversity.
