ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I would like to thank the many colleagues and friends whose ideas, thoughts, suggestions
and criticisms supported the writing of this book. In particular, a number of people
were kind enough to read various parts of the manuscript and offer advice – these
include Niall Winters, Will Farr, Carlo Perrotta and Enrique Hinostroza.
Much of the inspiration for this book stemmed from my experiences working
with, and talking to, other writers and researchers around the world who share my
interests in the area of education and technology. Even seemingly minor conversa-
tions with international colleagues when working away from the UK have helped
my thinking on many of the themes explored in this book – often setting me off on
various lines of enquiry and argument. In this sense, thanks are due to the following
people (among others): Andreas Breiter, Mark Brown, Lin Ching Chen, Enrique
Hinostroza, Kuo-Hung Huang, Ignacio Jara, Athanassios Jimoyiannis, Oystein
Johannessen, Yngve Nordkvelle, Francesc Pedro, Morten Søby, Cathrine Tømte and
Stefan Welling. Thanks also to Nicola Johnson and colleagues at Monash University
who supported the visiting scholarship that coincided with the completion of
the book.
I would also like to thank UK-based colleagues past and present with whom
I have talked these issues through – not least Daniella Boraschi, Phil Brown, Peter
Fairbrother, John Fitz, Michael Lightfoot, Martin Oliver, John Potter, Gareth Rees
and Susan Robertson.
I am always acutely aware of the hard work that goes into the production of any
book. So in terms of the writing and production of this book, I would like to thank
all of the production and editorial team at Routledge – notably Alex Masulis and
Anna Clarkson.
Most of all, I would like to thank Sophie for giving me the time required to
write this book.
