While I am not Vietnamese, last month I went on a trip to the Mekong Delta for the first time. I was there for one month. Some people invited me to visit their homes, and this is what I saw. In nearly every house, there was a small altar. This altar was to honor the ancestors. The altars had an incense burner that was usually a round bowl made either of brass or of blue and white porcelain. The family
filled bowls with sand or uncooked rice, which held the burning sticks of incense in place. The incense burner was usually placed in the center of the altar. To the side of the bowl was a vase with flowers and a lamp or candles. The family offered food – often fruit – on a plate that also sat on the altar. Tea and sweets were left on the altar, too. The lighted incense, candles and offerings honored the ancestors. Families remembered and venerated their ancestors with these offerings and prayers. Remembering well my trip to the Delta one month ago, it feels like it was only yesterday.
