 YESTERDAY

yesterday.
yesterday morning. yesterday afternoon. yesterday evening.
Yesterday is used alone and with morning, afternoon and evening. Notice that we cannot say yesterday night.

last night. last spring. last week. last summer. last month. last fall.
last year. last winter.
last Monday. last Tuesday. last Wednesday.
He was there ...
ten minutes ago. an hour ago. two hours ago. six days ago.
AGO
three weeks ago. nine months ago. a year ago.
five years ago.
Last is used with long periods of time such as the days of the week, seasons and weeks, months and years. Notice that it is used with night, but we cannot say: last morning, last afternoon and last evening.
Ago follows specific lengths of time – numbers and a/an – two days, three months, a week, an hour, for example. Ago means “in the past.”
