“Multiple Intelligences” Adaptation of Howard E. Gardner,
Multiple Intelligences: New Horizons in Theory and Practice
(New York: Basic Books, 2006).
Read along as you listen to this summary of Multiple Intelligences, refer to the following diagram, and identify the speaker’s three main points.
Howard Gardner advanced the theory of multiple intelligences 25 years ago, arguing that intelligence refers to a variety of mental processes. We all learn differently. He proposed eight different intelligences to capture the varied potential of young and adult learners.
Until Gardner introduced his theory, data, and analysis, the intelligence of people was typically measured with
an I.Q. Test. But Gardner argues this testing gives us a limited measurement of how most people process knowledge and skills. Here is Gardner’s summary of eight types of intelligence:
1. Verbal-Linguistic (word smart)— writing, reading, speaking, storytelling, interviewing, journaling
2. Logical-Mathematical (logic smart)—reasoning with cause and effect, experimenting, discerning patterns, puzzling with numbers and on mathematical formulas, and drawing analogies
3. Naturalistic (nature smart)—observing the flora and fauna of nature, examining climate change and the environment, and using microscopes, magnifiers, telescopes, and binoculars
4. Intrapersonal (self-smart)—contemplating values, setting and pursuing goals, journaling
5. Visual-Spatial (picture smart)—mapping, photographing, drawing, sculpting, painting, imaging
6. Musical (music smart)—singing, rapping, playing instruments, being rhythmical, and listening
7. Bodily-Kinesthetic (body smart)—gesturing and using movement to explain, dancing, planning events, demonstrating with hands-on activities, building things
8. Interpersonal (people smart)—socializing, leading, serving, teaching, and convening others
Matching Intelligence with Images
Match each image to one of the eight types of intelligence. Explain your choice to a partner.
