Building on the previous section, several pages of Productive skills follow, including Writing & Speaking materials and Out-of-Class Tasks for grades 10-12. Again, all materials derive from the context of Vietnam and the Delta. Tasks differ from activities in that students are encouraged to apply their linguistic and development learning in the real world. Also, each chapter features a task that asks students to compare
and contrast urban and rural realities in the Delta. Participating schools may use Global Classroom time for students to share their product with peers at
linked schools. Finally, MLA footnoting is modeled here as well. Each grade level of Productive skills ends with a quantitative Student Log of time spent each week applying new linguistic and development knowledge and skills. MLA footing is modeled.
An Integrative section completes
the Communicative Approach of the chapter with Inter-Cultural literature, movie suggestions, documentaries, and articles from other countries that tell stories about challenges similar to those faced by Vietnam and the Delta. This section includes an Assessment
that is both summative and formative.
The summative part is a Monitoring and Review section covering grammar, vocabulary, and sustainable development concepts introduced
in the chapter. This section draws on the Spelling Bees and Jitters the Weasel.
The formative part of assessment
is twofold. First, there is space
for students to Journal reflectively
on what they have learned in the chapter. Second, and most important, over the course of the first year of implementation of Bending Bamboo, we will create closing Profiles of students, schools, and youth who are responding in a meaningful and fun way to one or more of the Guiding Questions from the first page of the chapter.
