and seeking clarifications on the situation, different interpretations of whether
the implementation of the policy affected all vendors and customers or was
limited only to the Muslim community caused uneasiness among non-Muslim
groups.
YBAM respects and understands that the implementation of this policy is to
respect the Maghrib prayer period and allow Muslim vendors and customers to
fulfill religious obligations. YBAM hopes that this policy, which was implemented
in various local governments in Kedah in 2011, will maintain its original intention
and will not extend to and affect other religious and racial groups. The
establishment and implementation of policies need to consider the two major
realities of Islam being the official federal religion and Malaysia being a secular
nation. While ensuring the fulfillment of respective religious obligations, respect
for human rights, equality, and freedom of religion or belief must not be
overlooked.
