Watch out for these at home
Seek the attention of the health care providers if:
● Patient develops coughs or shortness of
breaths during feeding
● A sudden fever occurs
● The NGT is blocked or dislodged
● NGT is due for changing
Home Care Strategies: Food and Nutrition
● Feed a balanced diet & diet restriction
● Ensure patient has plenty of fluids throughout the day.
● Avoid feeding the patient when lying down flat- aspiration
● Make sure to prop up the patient’s head and
● Give very small bites or sips. If they can sit up, use a back
rest for support.
● Don’t rush. Feed the patient at a slow pace.
● Offer food in small amount and let them to chew well
before swallowing.
