Bottom: Trainee pilots prepare a route in front of their Airspeed Oxford aircraft, in what is probably a posed photograph, one of a series taken to welcome the Oxford to Cranwell in 1938. The Airspeed Oxford was the first twin- engined monoplane advanced trainer to enter service with the RAF at the end of 1937. The 'Ox-box' as it was known, had a distinguished career, serving at Cranwell until the end of 1950. The type was finally withdrawn from RAF training with the closure of No.10 AFTS Pershore, in 1954.
Below and right: At a 1939 open day, engineer- ing students demonstrate patching instruction, using the hull of Supermarine Southampton M638, one of many retired air-frames used at Cranwell for instructional purposes.
