Below: By May 1917 much of the initial building programme was complete. Squads of parading ratings have replaced the bell tents on the parade square and aeroplanes are operating from the South airfield. The three large
aeroplane sheds (D, E and F) in the top right of the photograph are believed to be F-types. Other buildings can be identified by referring to the site plan and key on pages 12 and 13.
Above: The first Royal visit to Cranwell was made by HM King George V and Queen Mary on 20th July 1916. The King and Queen are seen here with their entourage walking across the yet to be completed North aerodrome.
