Above: The contemporary caption to this photograph suggests that the Bessonneau hangar on the left of the picture was the first to be erected 'to house the Maurice Farman biplane'. However the construction of the two-storey barrack blocks indicates the photograph to have been taken after those on pages 7 and 8, neither of which feature the hangar. Perhaps the Bessonneau had been moved from another position on the station?
Above: An aerial view, from mid 1916, showing The Lodge, centre top, together with the nearby range of Victorian farm buildings. These buildings were commandeered by the first arrivals and are still in use as part of the Motor Transport yard. To the left of the picture is the first officers' mess building.
First Arrivals
Above: The first permanent hangars to be erected were situated on the North airfield. These and the other buildings can be identified from the site plan on page 12. On this photograph, dated 1st September 1916, we see The Lodge and original farm buildings in the upper right corner.
