Coastal Islands, Georgia
This trip through coastal Georgia can be tailored to the exact specifications of many
of your GSE for science or Georgia/US history. You may opt to immerse your students
in an in-depth study of Georgia's ecological systems by visiting the old Carniegie
ruins on Cumberland Island, learn about the challenges faced by Georgia's sea turtle
population while going through the program at the Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center
on Jekyll Island, or take a step back in time as you come face-to-face with the living
descendants of dinosaurs while spending the afternoon at the Okefenokee Swamp
Park. If you choose, you can focus your trip on the rich history of one of the original
13 colonies by touring the St. Simon's lighthouse, or an interpretive program at
Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation. Travel to Savannah to learn about the life of a Civil War
soldier at Old Fort Jackson, or discover the vital role played by Mighty 8th Air Force
during the Japanese conflict in WWII by touring the Mighty 8th Air Force Museum in
Pooler.
