When Maggie asked me to come up with a ‘few cakes or something’ for her outdoor, lakeside Rococo picnic I was stoked. Reviewing the inspiration boards, I realized this was going to be a bit of a challenge for an amateur baker, even with my two talented daughters helping. I started by researching the baked goods in France in the late 18 th century that royalty may have dined on at Versailles. I looked at Marie Antoinette themed parties and wedding showers for inspiration. I used my French to English dictionary often. The French love small Patisserie type cakes and pastries that can be hand held. Beautiful lavish decorations and decadent fresh fruits feature heavily in many of the paintings of this time. Using the paintings as inspiration, we decided to go with 4 main shapes for our baked goods in styles that mimic the classic French desserts of Mini Charlotte Royales, Quatre-Quarts Breton, Mille- Feuille with berries, and small colorfully layered cakes.
