Compressions for Children
Either a one or two hand technique can be used for performing chest compressions in children at the rate of 100 – 120 compressions per minute. A depth of at least 1/3 the chest depth applies.
Compressions for Infants
In infants the two finger technique should be used by placing two fingers in the centre of the infant’s chest and pressing down 1/3 of the chest depth.
The compression rate for infants is the same as an adult at 100 – 120 compressions per minute, with a depth of of 1/3 of their chest height.
Quality of Compressions
Compressions should be rhythmic with equal time for compression and relaxation. The rescuer must avoid either rocking backwards and forwards, or using thumps or quick jabs. Rescuers should allow complete recoil of the chest after each compression.
The quality of the compressions delivered will also reduce over time as the rescuer fatigues. Studies completed on the quality of compressions showed that after as little as 1 minute the depth and rate of compressions reduced and subsequently the likelihood of a favorable outcome reduced also.
