Chapter Nineteen








                “It’s been  six week s Mom, you gotta get  over  it.”
                    My  mother  sighs   int o  the  pho ne.   “You’re  my  onl y  daught er.  I  can’t
                hel p it if I’ve  been  drea ming  about your wed ding  your who le  life. ”
                    She  still  ha sn’t  forgiven  me,   even  tho ugh  she  was  there.   We  called

                her  right   bef ore  Allysa  booked  our  flight s.  We  forced   her  out  of  bed ,
                we  forced   R yle’s  parent s  out  of  bed ,  and   then  we  forced   them   all  on  a
                midni ght   flight   to  Veg as.  She   didn’t  try  to  talk  me     out  of  it  bec ause
                I’m  sure  she  could  tel l  tha t  R yle  and   I  ha d  made  up  our  mind s  by  the
                time  she  made  it  to  the  airport.  But  she  ha sn’t  let   me  forget   it.  She’s

                been    drea ming      of   a   hu ge   wed ding    and    dres s   sho pping    and    cake
                tasting  sinc e  the  day I was born.
                    I  kick  my  feet   up  on  the  couch.   “How  about  I  make  it  up  to  you?”  I
                say  to  her.  “Wha t  if,  whenev er  we  dec ide  to  ha ve  a  baby,  I  promise  to
                do it the  na tural way and  no t buy one  in  Veg as?”
                    My    mom      laughs .   Then     she    sighs .   “As   long    as   you   give   me
                grand chi ldren  somed ay, I guess I can  get  over  it.”

                    R yle   and    I   talked    about   kids   on   the   flight    to   Veg as.   I   want ed    to
                make  sure  tha t possibility was open  for  discussion  in  our  future  bef ore
                I made  a commitment  to spen d the  res t of my life  with  hi m. He  said it
                was defi ni tel y open  for  discussion.  Then  we  clea red  the  air  about a lot
                of other  thi ng s tha t might  cause  problem s down  the  road. I told hi m I
                want ed   sep arate  chec king   account s,  but  sinc e  he  makes   more  money

                tha n   me,   he   has  to  buy  me   lots  of  pres ent s  all  the   time   to  keep   me
                ha ppy. He  agreed . He  made  me  promise  hi m I’d nev er  bec ome  veg an.
                Tha t  was  a  simple  promise.   I  love  chees e  too  much.   I  told  him  we  ha d
                to  start  some  kind   of  cha rity,  or  at  lea st  dona te  to  the   ones   Marsha ll
                and   Allysa  like.   He   said  he   alrea dy  does ,  and   tha t  made    me   want   to
                marr y  hi m  ev en    sooner.  He  made  me  promise  to  vote.   He  said  I  was
                allowed   to  vote  Dem ocratic,  Rep ublican,   or  Ind ep end ent ,  as  long   as  I

                made  sure  to vote.  We  sho ok on  it.
