Case Study
Two officers deployed on Operation GRIP working a 21.00 – 03.00 shift, had completed their first foot patrol on a hotspot and were travelling to the very close-by second hotspot. Whilst travelling between the hotspots they stopped to speak to door supervisors as part of their tasking to make visits to licensed premises who raised concerns about a male inside the pub. When the officers spoke with him, it quickly became apparent there were grounds for detaining the male to conduct a Section 23 Misuse of Drugs Act search and because of his clothing a van was requested to transport him to the Police Station to complete a thorough search. Prior to the van arriving, the officers located a lock knife secreted within his waist band. He was arrested for possession of a bladed article in a public place.
When the male was booked into custody it was found that he had provided false details to the GRIP officers and that he had only very recently been released from prison for a knife related offence. He was subsequently charged and remanded to court where he was further remanded to prison.
This was an excellent piece of work by officers conducting the tasking as directed, engaging with local guardians/security staff within the night-time economy and acting within their powers of stop and search proportionately.
