to read that Honorary Life Member John
Reid CNZM OBE had
left us. John Reid was a New Zealand cricketer who, from 1949 to 1965, played in 58 Test match- es and captained New Zealand in 34 of them. He was the country’s rst cricketing captain to achieve victory, both at home against the West Indies in 1956, and the rst away win against South Africa in 1962.
John Reid was also one of the rst international match referees. He died in Auckland at the age of 92. An International Cricket Council (ICC) referee, Reid oversaw a total of 50 Tests and 98 One Day Interna- tionals in the period from 1993-2002, 14 of the Tests being in Sri Lanka, 13 in Australia, 6 in England, 5 in India and 4 each in Pakistan, South Africa and the West Indies.
ICC chief executive Manu Sawhney praised Reid’s contribution to the game, saying in a statement
he was “a ne player and captain of his era” who continued to contribute to the game in various capacities after his playing retirement. The latter included as coach of Northern Transvaal for seven years, and,for a shorter time, Transvaal, then as a
NZ national selector and team manager, and after that he had what the chief executive described as
“an admirable stint as an eminent ICC Match Referee.”
Several media reports said that as a match referee Reid’s insistence that the etiquette of cricket - as well as its laws - be maintained, won him many friends. He was awarded an OBE for services to sport, especially cricket, in 1962, and in 2014 a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, also for services to cricket.
Forty Club President Johnny Barclay as the then manager of the England XI got to know John the match referee very well and “ indeed had dinner with him once or twice usually in an attempt to persuade him to be lenient with some errant England players. I liked him very much. Tough but very clear and much respected especially by our captain, Mike Atherton, who was as often as not up in front of the beak. I acted very successfully as the defence barrister!”
