MATTHEW MARK LUKE JOHN
- That One Man Should Die -
Matt 22:15-23:12 • Mark 12:12-39 • Luke 20:20-46 • John 11:47-53
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
¶ Then went the Pharisees, • and they left him, and went their way. • Then gathered the chief
priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? [F]or this man doeth many miracles. If we let
him thus alone, all men will believe on him: [A]nd the Romans shall come and take away both our place
and nation. And one of them named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye
know nothing at all, [n]or consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people,
and that the whole nation perish not. And this spake he not of himself: [B]ut being high priest that year,
he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation; [a]nd not for that nation only, but that also he should
gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad. Then from that day forth they
took counsel together • how they might entangle him in his talk • for to put him to death. •
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
¶ And they watched him, and sent forth spies, • unto him certain of the Pharisees • their
disciples with the herodians, • which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his
words, • to catch him in his words. • [T]hat so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of
the governor. • And when they were come, • they asked him, saying, • unto him, • Master, we know that
thou art true, • that thou sayest and teachest rightly, • the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for
any man: [F]or thou {regardest / acceptest} • not the person of • any • men • but teachest the way of God
truly: • Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? • Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Cæsar, or {no /
not?} • Shall we give, or shall we not give? But he, knowing their hypocrisy, • Jesus perceived their
{wickedness / craftiness}, and said unto them, • Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites? Shew me the tribute
money. • [B]ring me a penny, that I may see it. • And they brought unto him a penny. And he saith unto
them, Whose is this image and superscription? • Whose image and superscription hath it? They
answered and said • unto him, Cæsar’s. • Then • Jesus answering said unto them, • Render therefore
unto Cæsar the things which {are / be} • Cæsar’s; and unto God the things {that are / which be} • God’s.
