- Prepare Ye the Way -

¶ N[ow] in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Ceasar, Pontius Pilate being governor of
Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituræa and of the region
of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene, • [in] those days • [t]here was a man sent from God,
whose name was John. • Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John
the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. And • John the Baptist • came into all the country about Jordan, •
preaching in the wilderness of Judæa, • the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins; • [a]nd
saying, Repent ye: [F]or the kingdom of heaven is at hand. • The same came for a witness, to bear
witness of the Light,that all men through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear
witness of that Light. • For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, • [a]s it is written in the
prophets, • in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, • Behold, I send my messenger
before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. The voice of one crying in the wilderness,
Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. • Every valley shall be filled, every mountain
and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be
made smooth; [a]nd all flesh shall see the salvation of God. • That was the true Light, which lighteth
every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the
world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But to as many as received
him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which
were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word
was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the
Father,) full of grace and truth. •

¶ John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission
of sins. • And the same John had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and
his meat was locusts and wild honey. • John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of
