¶ And after these things he went forth, • [a]nd as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man,
named Matthew, • Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the receipt of custom, • and he said unto him,
Follow me. And he left all, rose up, and followed him.

¶ And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: • And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at
meat in his house, • behold, {many / there was a great company} of publicans • and sinners • and of
others that • also came and sat down • together with Jesus and his disciples: For there were many, and
they followed him. But • when • their scribes and Pharisees • saw him eat with publicans and sinners,
they • murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners? •
{Why / How} is it that • your Master eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners? • But when Jesus
heard that, • Jesus answering said unto them, • They that are whole have no need of the physician, but
they that are sick: • But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am
not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. •

¶ And the disciples of John and the Pharisees used to fast: • Then came to him the disciples of
John, • [a]nd they said unto him, Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and
likewise the disciples of the Pharisees; • but thy disciples fast not? • [B]ut thine eat and drink? • And
Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber mourn, • [c]an ye make the children of the
bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? • [A]as long as they have the bridegroom with
them, they cannot fast. But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them,
and then shall they fast in those days. •

¶ And he spake also a parable unto them; • No man also {seweth / putteth} a piece of new
{garment / cloth} on an old garment: {else / for / if otherwise}, then both • {the new piece / that} which
is put in to fill it up • maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new {agreeth not with /
