feeling by 10 and you’ll have a notion of how Mateo felt. Alone,
or so he thought, he huddled in a tight ball, bringing his knees
up close to his chest until they hurt. How long he sat like that
is anyone’s guess, but both moons were well above the veil of
trees, their light extinguishing all the stars, by the time he began

to relax again.
The entrance to the cave was very small (hence the need
for the masterful baseball slide). But inside, it was large enough
to stand up and move around. Moons-light poured through
the opening and still alarmed and unsettled him, but he felt
less fear now and he suspected that he might have overreacted.
If you’re in a different world, after a trip through space, there
is no reason to expect there to be only one moon or that the
moon(s) would be the same size as Earth’s. In fact, the whole

notion of being scared suddenly seemed rather silly to him and
he was able to stand, a little shakily, and take a renewed interest
in where he was.
