and mouth wide open with fright, he flew across the forest until
he reached a meadow surrounded by granite boulders the size
of houses. It was here, in the searing light of the two moons,
that he spied a cave and, almost at the same instant, used his
best baseball sliding moves to skid through the opening.

Mateo’s heart was beating so wildly that he could feel
the blood pounding inside his skull. His mouth went bone dry.
For the first time that day, despite the warm and fuzzy feeling
