The effectiveness of a surveyor is considerably enhanced if he can imbibe the

following two broad group of skills :

i) Investigation Skills - focussed to a) ascertain the factual cause of loss and b)

factual quantum of loss suffered due to the said cause.

ii) Negotiation skills - Adoption of different negotiation approaches to suit the

nature and attitude of the claimant.

The following action or inaction of the insured will provide the surveyor with some

insight into the need for detailed probe / investigation (with regard to the time of

loss, cause of loss and extent of loss)

i) Deliberate neglect of the property, and threatening to make it appear that the

progressive deterioration is chargeable to the surveyor's delay and / or refusal

to settle.

ii) Claim of the insured that the "records" are lost in fire, or in such other

calamities, whereas the physical evidences do not corroborate such an

eventuality,
