I think a Local Hero challenges the fact that development only goes in one way, and that’s
a global way. It demonstrates that communities and small groups of people can see things that even a super global group of people don’t.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to create a Local Hero challenger?
I would advise them to challenge the fundamentals. So, for us, it was about challenging ourselves with regards to how beer is made and what the different ingredients of beer are.
Secondly, you’ve got to believe in it. I don’t think you do it only for the financial gain, but because you truly believe it will uplift the community and that what the community and the individuals in the community can bring is something that really matters.
Then lastly, be close to the communities. If your product is produced in the anthills of the savannah, go live there, find out what it is really like. You have to prove that you’re a Local Hero. You can’t just dress up like a Local Hero and if somebody scratches beneath the surface, you are a wolf in sheep’s clothing. You have to be a Local Hero.
