SEPTEMBER 3
THE SHULAMITE 14 His hands are rods of gold
Set with beryl.
I sleep, but my heart is awake; His body is carved ivory
2
It is the voice of my beloved! Inlaid with sapphires.
He knocks, saying, 15
“Open for me, my sister, my love, His legs are pillars of marble
Set on bases of fine gold.
My dove, my perfect one; His countenance is like Lebanon,
For my head is covered with dew, Excellent as the cedars.
My locks with the drops of the night.” 16 His mouth is most sweet,
3
I have taken off my robe; Yes, he is altogether lovely.
How can I put it on again? This is my beloved,
I have washed my feet; And this is my friend,
How can I defile them? O daughters of Jerusalem!
4
My beloved put his hand THE DAUGHTERS OF JERUSALEM
By the latch of the door,
And my heart yearned for him. Where has your beloved gone,
5 6
I arose to open for my beloved, O fairest among women?
And my hands dripped with myrrh, Where has your beloved
My fingers with liquid myrrh, turned aside,
On the handles of the lock. That we may seek him with you?
6
I opened for my beloved, THE SHULAMITE
But my beloved had turned away 2 My beloved has gone to his garden,
and was gone.
My heart leaped up when he spoke. To the beds of spices,
To feed his flock in the gardens,
I sought him, but I could not find him; And to gather lilies.
I called him, but he gave me no 3 I am my beloved’s,

7 And my beloved is mine.
found me.
They struck me, they wounded me; THE BELOVED
The keepers of the walls

If you find my beloved, Lovely as Jerusalem,
That you tell him I am lovesick! Awesome as an army with banners!
5 Turn your eyes away from me,
THE DAUGHTERS OF JERUSALEM For they have overcome me.
9 Your hair is like a flock of goats
What is your beloved
More than another beloved, Going down from Gilead.
O fairest among women? 6 Your teeth are like a flock of sheep
What is your beloved Which have come up from the
More than another beloved, washing;
That you so charge us? Every one bears twins,
And none is barren among them.
THE SHULAMITE 7 Like a piece of pomegranate

10
Chief among ten thousand.
8
11 His head is like the finest gold; There are sixty queens
His locks are wavy, And eighty concubines,
And black as a raven. And virgins without number.
His eyes are like doves
12 9 My dove, my perfect one,
By the rivers of waters, Is the only one,
Washed with milk, The only one of her mother,
And fitly set. The favorite of the one who bore her.
13 The daughters saw her
His cheeks are like a bed of spices,
Banks of scented herbs. And called her blessed,
His lips are lilies, The queens and the concubines,
Dripping liquid myrrh. And they praised her.
