Research projects
04 Project 01 The final report of the classification system was received during
November as expected. The results are based on dissection data
of 120 pig carcasses of varying fatness, weights and genders
Projects representative of the main breeds currently produced in South
Africa. This report contains new regression equations to predict
carcass lean content. Great gratitude is expressed to Dr Wantie
Burger and Lynca Meats for their involvement and kind
arrangements to collect data and supply of carcasses for this trial.
Likewise Dr Strydom and his team at Irene is thanked for their
diligence to ensure accurate (Low RMSEP values) predictions.
Project 02 Melissa Cupido’s contract has been signed by Stellenbosch
University. First report received. Payment can now be made.
Project 03 Dr Juanita van Heerden of the ARC-OVI at Onderstepoort for
a project titled:” The Risk of African Swine Fever to Gauteng”
Partial funding. CEO signed the contract. Funding can now flow.
Project 04 Dr Mokoele of the Veterinary faculty at Onderstepoort for
partial funding of a PhD project on “The prevalence, perceptions
and mitigation of antimicrobial resistance in pig farms of
Gauteng province and surroundings in South Africa”. SAPPO was
asked to fund the part on molecular markers. Signing of the
contract has been done.
