FRANCE STARTS – AND LOSES – A WAR WITH THE
GERMAN STATE OF PRUSSIA
The Franco-Prussian War is a conflict between the French Empire of
Napoleon III (a nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte), and the Germanic Kingdom of
Prussia. Prussia is aided by a confederation of many smaller German states. The
swift Prussian / German victory thwarts French ambitions in central Europe, and
brings about the end of Napoleon III’s rule.
