Brown is found guilty on all counts and hanged. Southerners believe that his
rebellion is just the tip of the abolitionist iceberg and represented the wishes of
the Republican Party to end slavery. The Harpers Ferry raid in 1859 escalates
already existing tensions that, a year later, will lead to secession and the Civil
War. Had it not been for unreasonable psychopaths like Brown, the South

would, in due time, have phased out slavery without bloodshed – as other
countries already had done.
