Another sleeping man, and another; they’re all asleep! Their heads lolling to
one side and their arms stuck awkwardly under their bellies. And each with
that face, that dead stare, like a horse’s eye. A hundred. That’s a hundred
corpses. A hundred and one, a hundred and two, a hundred and three. They
stacked eighty-four men, forty-four women and eighteen children. First one
row which was covered with old blankets, and then another laid in the other
direction; and so on. It was 2nd January 1891.
