Introduction to Larsen and Toubro
Larsen & Toubro Limited, or L&T, is an Indian multinational corporation headquartered in Chen-
nai, Tamil Nadu, India. L&T is India's largest engineering and construction company in India.
History: The company was founded in Mumbai in 1938 by two Danish engineers, Henning
Holck-Larsen (chemical engineer)
and Soren Kristian Toubro (civil en-
gineer). In 1944, ECC was incorpo-
rated by the partners; the company
at this time was focused on con-
struction projects. In 1976, Holck-
Larsen was awarded the Magsaysay
Award for International Understand-
ing in recognition of his contribution
to India's industrial development. He
retired as Chairman in 1978.Later
Henning Holck Larsen died in 2003 at the Breach Candy hospital, Mumbai after a prolonged ill-
ness.
Introduction to CSTI
India's largest engineering construction organization founded the Construction Skills Training In-
stitute (CSTI) way back in 1995 at Chennai, with a motive to regulate and promote Construction
Vocational Training in India in a professional manner. For more than a decade, CSTI has been
developing a trained workforce through structured training. In the shortest possible time, CSTI
branches have been established in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Hyderabad,
and Cuttack.
Objectives of CSTI are:
To prepare the construction workforce to meet the imminent explosion in the demand for world
class construction in terms of the required level of quality of workmanship and productivity.
To classify training requirements and to set standards to monitor occupational levels of compe-
tency of the technicians to be deployed in construction.
To disseminate knowledge & appropriate skill practice through recognized systems of training,
testing and certification to validate levels of competency.
To facilitate training by setting up modular training schools with well-defined infrastructure and
curricula.
