$2 Million Futurity on Dec. 13, and she went off as the 6-1 third choice.
When the gate opened, Apollitical Patty flew to the front. She capitalized on that advan- tage and simply dominated, remaining on the lead throughout and winning by a pretty easy 1/2-length. Apollitical Patty stopped the timer in :19.566.
“She’s a little rowdy in the gate, but she stood perfectly,” said Cervantes, who has been aboard in all of her races. “She reared up a little bit, but sat back and stood there. Just by break- ing out of the gate, I knew I had them. I knew this filly—she always had talent.”
Apollitical Patty was winning her sixth race in eight starts, and she finished second in the Los Alamitos Juvenile Challenge Stakes.
After the race, Arrossa spoke movingly about Walker. “I was thinking just how special it is to win it with a homebred and Idaho- bred,” said the trainer. “This was a 40-year dream for Jim Walker. He worked hard. He had just two mares, and it all came to fruition. I just wish Jim could have been here to enjoy it. I know he’s watching over us. He’s a special
guy. They are a special family. When I came to Los Alamitos, he was my biggest supporter.”
Walker purchased A Perfect Cocktail as
a 3 year old for that $250. She had finished unplaced in all three of her races as a 2 year old. For Walker at three, she won only one race, earning a career total of $1,975. But she has made up for it as a broodmare. A Perfect Cocktail has produced six winners in seven starters. In addition to Apollitical Patty and Zoomin For Spuds, her winners include stakes winners Bux For Cocktail and Jesses Perfect One and stakes-placed Doing Trix.
“I’ve trained every baby out of that mare, and every baby except two have been stakes horses,” said Arrossa. “They all have about the same personality. They all are nice-looking horses with big hearts.”
Arrossa recalled that he often asked Walker what he had seen in A Perfect Cocktail.
“There was something about her that he just liked,” Arrossa said. “He was a pedigree researcher and a studier. It did not seem to matter what he crossed her with—she would do well. He would buy breedings and supported
our local Bitterroot (stallion) auction in Idaho. He was really proud of being able to compete with the best breeders in the world with just two mares.”
Flash Bak (Moonin The Eagle-Checknbac) finished second under jockey Jose Nicasio for owner Dutch Masters III and trainer Jaime Gomez. The gelding had won three prior races and qualified to the All American Futurity-G1, running unplaced after a troubled trip.
The Grant R. Cox Revocable Trust homebred Apollitical Gold (Apollitical Jess-SRC Gold) ran third. Jimmy Brooks
rode the gelding for trainer Eddie D. Willis. Apollitical Gold won the Golden State Million Futurity-G1 and finished third in the All American Futurity.
Followed by Monopolist (Favorite Cartel- Nymph), Doc Lamb (Tres Seis-Third Painted Sign), SC Divas Cartel Man (Corona Cartel- Spit Curl Diva), Aint She Tempting (Tempting Dash-Preslee The First), Famous Cartel Jess (Mr Jess Perry-Famous Cartel), Terrific Temper (Tempting Dash-Terrific Energy) & Counting The Ways (Favorite Cartel-Million Ways).
Apollitical Patty’s winning connections include owner Walker Family Trust, trainer Monty Arrossa and jockey Armando Cervantes.
