Martha Wells is an active owner and breeder, so Tell Cartel’s win in the $1,020,350 Los Alamitos Super Derby-G1 on
Nov. 8 was a triumph on many levels.
“I’m excited about the stud prospect because
he is so nice,” Wells said after the race. “He has such a nice mind. I’ll send him to Fales Ranch in Arizona. The Fales have done so much for me. They love him like I love him.”
But first Tell Cartel may tackle the Dec. 12 Champion of Champions-G1 at Los Alamitos. The Los Alamitos Super Derby earned him a berth to the prestigious race, where he would face older runners.
Tell Cartel qualified the fastest for the Super Derby when he aced his trial by 1 1/4-lengths in :19.599 for 400 yards on Oct. 17.
He shaded that time in the final, com- pleting the distance in :19.324 for a 105 speed index. Sent off as the second choice behind John Carter Cash, Tell Cartel bumped at the start and came away in third. He moved into contention immediately and
