                 Handicap. This year, he won the Los Alamitos Winter Derby-G1 and El Primero Del Ano Derby-G3 and then was off for five months. His Los Alamitos Super Derby trial was his first win in four starts since the layoff.
“This is unbelievable—I’m so proud of him,” Wells said. “This horse is so cool. He needed some time off after the El Primero. It took him a few races to find himself again.”
Wells bred Tell Cartel in California from Chicks Tell, who raced for Wells and won the 2002 Huntington Beach Handicap. Bred by the legendary trainer Blane Schvaneveldt, Chicks Tell
has produced 27 winners in 34 starters, including stakes winners Forrest Fire and My Favorite Cartel and six stakes-placed runners. The second dam, Tell The Boys No, won the 1992 Sunland Park Fall Derby-G3 under Schvaneveldt’s tutelage.
Mental Error (Favorite Cartel-Iba Quick Chick), ridden by Jairo Rangel, trained by Paul Jones, and owned by Bobby Simmons, finished second. The colt ran second in the 2019 Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity-G2 and third in the 2020 Los Alamitos Winter Derby-G1.
Wootan Racing’s homebred Oatman Creek Senator (Louisiana Senator-Eyesa Lil Cuervo)
ran third. Raul Ramirez Jr. rode the gelding for trainer Justin Joiner. Oatman Creek Senator won this year’s All American Invitational Stakes and ran third in the 2019 Ruidoso Futurity-G1.
Completing the field were Cattail Cove (Favorite Cartel-Katie Katella), Really First Down (First Down Dash-Really A Corona), Mr Ricks (Mr Jess Perry-Aquafina), Kiss Thru Fire (Walk Thru Fire-Fredaville), One Sweet Change (One Sweet Jess-Echo Boomer), John Carter Cash (Carters Cartel- One Fast Trick) and Pay Me In Front (FDD Dynasty-Bac In Front).
