PERRYS DOUBLE DOWN

It’s said that all good things come to those who wait. So, there we were, with Texas looking for rain and Perrys Double Down looking for his
first stakes win.
Everyone wound up happy. The wait paid
off and everybody got soaked together on a rainy Nov. 28 night at Lone Star Park, where Perrys Double Down was sent off at odds of 8-1 in the $393,210 Texas Classic Derby-G1. With Francisco Calderon in the irons for trainer John Stinebaugh, the 3-year-old gelding broke in and bumped early from the 7-post, but caught hold of the sloppy track and raced to a 1/2-length score while sprint- ing the quarter-mile in :21.478 and posting a 98 speed index.
“He stayed (in the gate) pretty good and left there on top,” Calderon said. “His last race, in the trials, was the first time he had trouble in the gate and he didn’t break so good. Tonight, he was slipping a little bit, so I had to grab and ride him a couple times, but it didn’t bother
