Garanones Derby
SE ROMANCE OF CARTEL

On October 11, 2020, the qualifying races towards the final of this Derby were held, restricted to stallions that have stood in Mexico
and whose foals were presented at the XXXIV Annual Select Auction held on Sept. 4, 5 and 6, 2018. Forty-one aspirants participated in these races to obtain the 10 qualifying positions to run in the great final, over a distance of 350 yards.
However, on the date mentioned above, there were two unfortunate losses: Hublot Cartel of the Cuadra Cartas Blancas, who
had the fastest time (:17.120), and One Zulu Dragon, of the Cuadra Santa Cruz, who won his race in :17.312, the fifth fastest on the list. Thus, the final was run with eight participants; three of them belonging to Rancho El Suspiro and two to Cuadra Santa Cruz.
Already in action some infractions were observed among the participants, the most notorious and sanctioned by the judges was the one committed by the filly Chispita Two, which cost her to be moved from the third
to the last place. She, together with La Rejia “locked up” Malefico Cartel and obstructed her way in the first stages.
Other participants who avoided the traffic took advantage of this and other incidents to escape at full speed. This was the case of the Taliban Chicks, next to the inside rail, Rex Sambaso in the center and SE Romance Of Cartel on the right side of the track. The latter accelerated thoroughly
from mid distance and dominated the group, crossing the finish line at 1-length ahead of Rex Sambaso, who overtook Malefico Cartel by the slightest difference.
Alejandro Gómez Díaz was responsible for leading SE Romance Of Cartel to victory in :17.17 (SI 91), having been the
same jockey who rode him in
the trials, where he finished third in his trial, with a time of :17.422, the tenth in the list.
Owned and bred by the
Cuadra Santa Elena, under the
care of Joaquín Ramón Peláez - Cortés, this colt gave an amaz-
ing run for all, taking the first
classic to his record, as well as
the third victory in eight outs.
He is the product of the cross-
ing of the stallion Millennium
Cartel and the mare Made For Romance (by Azoom). He was
saddled by Liderme René Gómez Díaz.
The total purse for this Derby was 1’119,450 pesos (approx. $53,077 US), of which $470,169 pesos (approx. $22,292 US) was credited to the SE Romance Of Cartel account, which totals $600,629 pesos. This was the first of two classics that the Cuadra Santa Elena won on the afternoon of October 25th, since one hour later they did the same in the Alfredo Castro Rea Classic, where they also captured second, third and fourth place.
At the 2018 Select Auction, this beauti- ful chestnut (Hip # 448) was repurchased for $150,000 pesos (approx. $7,690 US).
Rex Sambaso (Sambaso Dancer-The Answer Lady, by Corona Cartel), took second place for $190,306 pesos ($9,023 US approx.), under
the command of José Ángel Ambrosio Medina. The gelding belongs to Rancho El Suspiro and was saddled by Ismael Ayala.
Malefico Cartel (Danny Cartel-La Chuchena, by This Snow Is Royal) finished in third place, under the direc- tion of Leonardo Vidaña. The gelding is owned by Rancho El Suspiro and was also saddled by Ismael Ayala.
The arrival was completed with: Taliban Chicks (Allens Cash - Miss Chicks Perry);
Corona Sheeza (Danny Cartel - Latina Sheeza); La Rejia (Bullish One - Eye Teller); No Baja (Bullish One - Baja Luna); and the disqualified Chispita Two (Danny Cartel - La Tonita).
