Las Americas Derby
MAS BUENA
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
Derby Las Americas is the third gem of the Triple Crown. Each race had a different winner: first Florentines Favorite in the Easily
A Possum Classic, then Temptobthebest in the AMCCCCM Classic, and now Mas Buena in Las Americas Derby. This keeps Reacher 16 as the last Triple Crown winner, in 2019.
Five horses were entered in this Derby, which had a purse of $295,400 pesos ($14,324 dollars approx.) with a 400-yard course.
Attention was focused on the fillies Mas Buena and Florentines Favorite, which in the current season had already met three times on the track, resulting in two victories for the latter and three second places for Mas Buena.
And indeed, it was these two fillies
that put on the show. Florentines Favorite started from position #1 and moved with agility very close to the inside track, while Mas Buena left from gate #4 and took over the center of the track to go after their rival under the guidance of Heriberto Camacho Sotelo. His effort paid off, as in the last 100 yards he achieved his goal, taking the lead to cross the finish line 1 1/2-lengths in front of his opponent. He had :19.46 to do so with a SI 95.
The winner was received by José Luis Tavizón Barraza, her trainer, with a loving kiss and entered the winner’s circle, where she was awarded by Adriana Gómez Barnola, Manager of the Mexican Association
of Breeders and Quarter
Horse jockeys.
Stel Corona’s daughter out of Plenty Good (by Separatist) puts her record at 2-4-1 in 7 outs, and adds $147,700 pesos (approx. $7,162 US) to her winnings account. She was bred in the United States by John Firth and is owned by Cuadra El Cuartel.
It is worth mentioning
that she is also the winner
of the Clásico Jesús “Nuchi”
Jiménez Sánchez in 2019 and
that, for her young jockey Heriberto Camacho Sotelo, it is the first classic he has ever won.
In second place was Florentines Favorite (Favorite Cartel - Czechthis Florentine, by Corona Czech), under the direction of José Manuel Cisneros. The filly is owned by Cuadra Los Arrallanes and saddled by Luis Eduardo Flores Gómez.
The gelding One Mc Fling (One Dashing Eagle - Southern Fling, by Southern Corona) was in third place, directed by José Ángel Ambrosio Medina. He belongs to the Cuadra
Baldeli and was saddled by Ismael Ayala Salas.
The finish was com- pleted with: Thompson Bay (Favorite Cartel - Flying Regal, by A Regal Choice) and Cartel Jumpn Chic (Jumpn Chic - Cash Cartel, by Corona Cartel).
