Alfredo Castro Rea Classic
AR DASHIN WAGGIN
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
In the qualifying races for the final of the Alfredo Castro Rea Classic, 27 of the 29 run- ners entered participated in the trials, orga-
nized in three groups on Oct. 4, 2020, over a distance of 350 yards. The Cuadra Santa Elena had six representatives in this first stage, of which four advanced to the final, which took place three weeks later, on Oct. 25.
This is an open classic for two-year-old runners who have paid the corresponding registration fee. Cuadra Santa Elena topped the classification list with the three best times, with two wins and one second, as well as a third place, which corresponded to AR Dashin Waggin with :17.253 (the fastest) and Sweet Lil Ivory with :17.554, followed by BP Mariah Cartel, with :17.646 and further down with :17.777 the JM Volcom Regard colt in eighth place.
Because of the suspension of activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all of these colts and fillies made their official debut on Oct. 4.
At the start, She Changes (#2) Licensed
Jet Rocket (#3), AH Goodtime Or Goodby (#5) and The Lips Knot (#7), slightly deviated their race direction, but without significantly affecting their companions. It was BP Mariah Cartel (#1A), who from gate three, immediately took the lead under the command of Alejandro
Gómez Díaz, but was joined in the battle for the lead by his stablemate AR Dashin Waggon, with rider José Ángel
Ambrosio Medina (#1B)
from position six, which he
achieved without problem,
dominating both BP Mariah
Cartel and Sweet Lil Ivory
(#1), closing in fourth place
was the colt JM Volcom
Regard (#1C), which moved
from the extreme starting
position 10.
In this way, we obtained
a never before seen finish
at the Hipodromo de las
Americas, where one cuadra
captured the first four positions at the finish, in this case the already mentioned Cuadra Santa Elena. The absence of the public in
the stands prevented the celebration of the achievement, but Joaquín Ramón Peláez, representative and trainer of these horses, witnessed with emotion the achievement of his outstanding “students.” It is worth men- tioning that one hour before SE Romance Of Cartel had won the Garañones Derby, breed- ing and ownership of the referred stable.
AR Dashin Waggin completed the distance in :17.10, for a 97 speed index, remaining unde-
feated in her two outings to the track. This allows her to add to her account $424,620 pesos (approx. $20,133 US), the main part of the prize assigned to this classic, which amounted to $1’011,000 pesos (approx. $47,935 US), to be distributed among the 10 finalists, according to their finishing position.
The red colt was bred in the United States by Atwood Ranches Inc. She is daughter of PYC Paint Your Wagon, out
of Curlie Cue (by First Down Dash). She was sold for $11,000 at the Heritage Place Fall Mixed Sale held on Nov. 1-2, 2019 (Hip #36). She was saddled by trainer Liderme Rene Gomez Diaz.
With a record of :17.17 (SI 95), BP Mariah Cartel took second place, which was $171,870 pesos ($8,149 US approx.), receiving instruc- tions from her rider Alejandro Gomez Diaz. She is the daughter of Corona Cartel, out of BP Mariahs JP (by Mr. Jess Perry) and was purchased for $22,000 at the Heritage Place
The dispute for the first place was defined in favor of AR Dashin Waggin (1B) leaving his partner BP Mariah Cartel (1A) in second place.
