Anselmo Aguilar Payan Classic
LAFISHINGONABUGSMOON
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
On Oct. 11, this classic took place in honor of the Mexican Quarter Horse breeder, Anselmo Aguilar Payán. Seven
Mexican runners three years and older were registered to compete for a prize of $345,400 pesos, over 350 yards. However, Seniorita Caro, from Rancho Amecameca, was removed, so a nice sextet was formed.
Lafishingonabugsmoon and AS Macho, both AQHA Mexican Champions, met in this classic which was the last competition of the Sunday program. Neither of them had seen action this season.
In the race, Q Tenampita (#4) bumped Bloodmoon Garoo AT (#3) and this in turn affected Bela Is Dancer (#2), while the burly Lafishingonabugsmoon (#1) exerted all his power from the first stride, near the inside track. From there he ran freely and, only at the end, was challenged by Pantera Down Dash (#5), but he arrived 3/4-length behind the famous runner, leaving AS Macho (#7) in third place.
The victory is also credited to Yair Daniel Baez Soto, who has ridden him in his last eight outings, winning six of them. This time, his race time was :17.02, for a SI 99. Let’s remem- ber that in 2019 the aforementioned pair won this classic (also starting from post position 1)
and imposed a new track record of 350 yards (:16.79), which remains valid today. He also holds the track records at
300 and 440 yards.
Named AQHA Mexican Champion in 2019, Lafishingonabugsmoon was raised by Ramiro Gonzalez Ozuna for his Cuadra Los Gavilanes, always under
the athletic preparation
of Ruben Romo Garcia.
He is a son of the stallion Nofishinonafullmoon out of the mare A Special Lady Bug (by My Mr Special Bug) and he is now seven years old.
With this result, his record remains at 13-11-3 in 37 outings to the track, and his earnings already exceed 2.4 million pesos.
His wins include the aforementioned clas-
sic Anselmo Aguilar Payan (twice), Salvador Oñate (twice), Javier Rosique Palavicini, The Bank Of America Challenge Championship in Mexico, Hector Roldan Espinosa and Enrique Carrion Alvarez.
As already mentioned Pantera Down Dash captured second place, well ridden by Alejandro Gomez Diaz. The daughter out
of Aguerrido in La Pantera (by Mr Perote) is owned by Cuadra Jojola R and was saddled by
Liderme René Gómez Díaz. In third place finished
AS Macho (California Cartel-Check This Star Out, by Check Him Out) with Alberto Cerón Zamudio at the helm. She belongs to the Cuadra Falcon and was also saddled by Liderme Rene Gomez Diaz.
The finish was com- pleted with: Bela Is Dancer (Ze Dancer-Isabela Eyesa), Bloodmoon Garoo AT (Kangaroofirst-Pistol
Packn Mama) and Q Tenampita (Tenampa Rooms-Centella Mill).
