Town Policy Stakes
DOCTOR GENE
by Tracy Gantz
Doctor Gene, winner of the $25,000 Town Policy Stakes at Los Alamitos on Nov. 7, has some impressive family connections. He is a half-brother
to Champion Aged Mare Quirky, who spent her entire career at Los Alamitos and won eight stakes.
The 3-year-old gelding took a step toward living up to that lineage when he captured the Town Policy, his first stakes. Ridden by Los Alamitos newcomer Luis Valenzuela, Doctor Gene broke well, sped to the lead, and scored by 1 1/2-lengths in :19.818 for 400 yards.
Valenzuela, who grew up in Arizona, was win- ning his first Los Alamitos stakes event. He rides both Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds and previ- ously won a couple of stakes at Canterbury Park. He piloted Doctor Gene for trainer Scott Willoughby and owner/breeder Dr. Ed Allred. Earlier this year, Doctor Gene finished third in the Vandys Flash Handicap for jockey Vinnie Bednar.
Allred bred Doctor Gene out of winner Dont Pass Bar. The second dam is stakes-placed Ynot Bar, who also produced stakes winners Ynot Walk and Tequila Sangria. Doctor Gene and Quirky are two of seven winners from 12 starters for Dont Pass Bar.
Jonathan Roman piloted Chocolate Divinity (Apollitical Blood-Nellie Delaney) to second for owner Wilson Ruiz and trainer Felix Gonzalez. Chocolate Divinity was coming off a second in
the Whataway To Go Stakes. J. Francisco Diaz’s homebred Chayito Cartel (Favorite Cartel-Runnin In Traffic) finished third. Raul Valenzuela rode the geld- ing for trainer Lindolfo Diaz. Chayito Cartel won the 2019 Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity-G2.
Completing the field were Invader (Tres Seis- Racing Winner), Long Time Favorite (Favorite Cartel-Long Stemmed Roses), Sass Go Blue (Seperate Interest-Sass Me Blue), Spring Favorite (Favorite Cartel-Spring Bling) and Bono Is Good (Favorite Cartel-Sables Bono).
Corona Chick Handicap
TELLER WITH CANDY
by Tracy Gantz
Teller With Candy demolished his competition in the $25,000 Corona Chick Handicap for 2 year olds at Los Alamitos on Nov. 14 in his first stakes win.
Sent off as the fifth choice at 11-1, Teller With Candy broke out of the gate in third under jockey Jesus Ayala from the rail. The gelding spurted to the lead, lugged out steadily toward the end, and won the 400-yard event by 2-lengths in :20.030 while posting an 86 speed index.
Lindolfo Diaz trains Teller With Candy for his father, J. Francisco Diaz. Teller With Candy broke his maiden in his third start and added an allowance victory before an unplaced effort in his trial for the Golden State Million Futurity-G1. The Corona Chick was his sixth outing.
Reliance Ranches LLC bred Teller With Candy in Oklahoma, and Francisco Diaz bought the geld- ing for $42,500 at the 2019 Heritage Place Yearling Sale. Teller With Candy and stakes-placed Im Tellin Ya are the two winners in five starters for the win- ning mare Teller N Telleragain.
Mike Casselman bred, owns, and trains second- place Rox Win (Seperate Interest-Mindys Favorite). Cruz Mendez piloted the gelding, who has two wins in eight starts.
Jose Nicasio rode Coronado Kiss (Coronado Cartel-Sixteen Kisses) to third for owners Andrea and Eddie Jensen and trainer Monty Arrossa. Coronado Kiss finished second in the South Valley Futurity and third in the Bitterroot Futurity-G3.
No Questions (Foose-Forgive Her), La Reina Del Sur 1 (Favorite Cartel-Go First N Famous), and AP A Special Takeoff (Favorite Cartel-Jet Takeoff) finished fourth, fifth, and sixth. Flight Queen (Foose-Aviatrix) and Volcums Hot Candy (Volcom- Candy Cartels Cat) dead-heated for seventh. One Sweet Venom (One Sweet Jess-Shake The Magic) finished ninth.
Snowbound Superstar H.
BALLAST POINT
by Tracy Gantz
In 2019, the Snowbound Superstar Handicap at Los Alamitos was run in two divisions. For 2020, the race did not split and both 2019 winners, Ballast
Point and JB Gray Dawn, returned to defend their titles, with Ballast Point scoring again.
The 870-yard event on Dec. 6 drew a field of three Quarter Horses and three Thoroughbreds. Ballast Point and JB Gray Dawn, both trained by Paul Jones, vied for the lead, with Ballast Point and jockey Ramon Guce leading early. The two Quarter Horses remained in front around the turn and into the stretch. JB Gray Dawn then faded, while Ballast Point went on to score by 2 1/2-lengths in :44.972, posting a 96 speed index.
Jones owns Ballast Point with Thompson Racing Inc. Ballast Point has won six of his last seven starts at 870 yards, including the 2020 Trick or Treat Handicap. His only loss during that streak came when he was second in the Harbor Beach Handicap.
Dr. Steve Burns bred Ballast Point out of stakes- winner Fall For It. The mare has produced nine winners from 11 starters, including two-time stakes winner Canselman, a full brother to Ballast Point.
Restoring Dreams TB (Candy Ride-Miss Alondra) finished second under jockey Edwin Maldonado for owners Christopher Drakos and Paul Girdner and trainer Ryan Hanson. The 3-year-old Thoroughbred gelding had won all three of his previ- ous starts at Los Alamitos, but has not won in 12 starts at Del Mar and Santa Anita.
Jesus Uranga owns and trains third-place Sokudo TB (Salute The Sarge-Beauallis). Eduard Fernandez rode the 7-year-old Thoroughbred gelding, who won the 2020 Harbor Beach Handicap at Los Alamitos.
Completing the field were Loan Sharky (Parsons Rock-Lil Sharky), JB Gray Dawn (Heza Fast Dash- Skyline Dawn Too TB) and Run Factor TB (The Factor-Our Republic).
