When Steve Holt of Guthrie, Oklahoma, and Jeff Jones of Pembroke, North Carolina, decided to arrange a foal-sharing breeding 14 years ago, they couldn’t have predicted where it would lead. Crazy Down Corona, the result-
ing foal, produced Empressum, who captured
the $355,800 Remington Park Oklahoma-Bred Derby-RG2 on April 17.
“We met at the Ruidoso sale years ago,” said Holt. “I had a really nice Corona Cartel mare who was a stakes mare and out of a really big family that went back to Debonairess.”
Holt’s mare, stakes-winning Crazy About Corona, was out of graded stakes winner Fontana Beaujolais. A daughter of stakes-placed Debonairess, Fontana Beaujolais was a half- sister to the likes of multiple grade 1 winner Fast Debonair.
“I had a chance to sell the mare, but Jeff had this share, and so we foal-shared,” said Holt.
