AQHA Challenge Championship Weekend
AQHA Cox Ranch Distance Challenge Championship-G1
MADEWELL
by Tracy Gantz
Ray Madewell was justifiably proud of namesake Madewell when the big geld- ing won the $101,606 AQHA Cox Ranch
Distance Challenge Championship-G1 at Albuquerque Downs on Oct. 24.
Madewell won the 2020 Downs at Albuquerque Distance Challenge-G2
for trainer Bernard Baca
and jockey Jorge Bourdieu on Aug. 23. Ray said that Bourdieu subsequently got hurt on another horse and was unable to ride Madewell back in the Challenge Championship. Benito Baca, the trainer’s son, deputized.
“Both are excellent riders,” said Ray, who also complimented Bernard Baca on the job he has done training Madewell.
In the 870-yard race, Madewell broke third and settled in fifth, saving ground around the turn. Benito angled Madewell outside of the two
leaders in the stretch, and Madewell pulled away to score by 2 3/4-lengths in :44.684, posting a 111 speed index.
“Coming around the
turn, I realized how close
I was and how much horse I had,” said Benito. “I ran on by them today and hoped they didn’t come catch us.”
Ray and his wife, Davy, bred Madewell in Oklahoma, and Ray raised him at their property in Ringling, just west of Ardmore.
The Madewells bred the gelding out of lightly raced Streakin Peacock. She has produced 100% money earners from four starters.
Madewell is her first stakes winner. Ray takes special care of the mare, who has a chronic throat problem.
“I can’t feed her regular feed like pellets,” said Ray. “I have to make a mash out of it so she can drink it.”
Streakin Peacock has two winners from four starters. Ray plans to breed Streakin Peacock back next year to either Send A Candy Guy, sire of her yearling colt, or Jess Jones, the sire of Madewell.
Illtakeyouforaride (FDD Dynasty- Dashingfordestiny) finished second
under jockey Kelsi Purcell for owner Illtakeyouforaride Partnership and trainer Cody Joiner. Jesus Valenzuela rode SW Bullet Proof (Second Painted Sign-Jazzin Shabby Chic) to third. Travis Lusk trains the gelding for owner Jason Udy.
Completing the field were High On Chablis (High Rate Of Return-Toast Of Chablis), Higher Flyin Eagle (Favorite Cartel- Royaltime Separatist), Edelman (Favorite Cartel-Katie Katella), Ms Esther (Afrashad- TB-Tres Down The Cash) and CM Once Ina Bluemoon (Ivory James-Cool Blue Corona).
