LYNNDER 16
by Tracy Gantz
Despite a ruckus at the gate, favored Lynnder 16 acted like a complete pro- fessional to win the $101,675 ARC Distaff
Challenge Championship-G1 at The Downs at Albuquerque on Oct. 24.
Tom Maher of Pierre, South Dakota, who owns Lynnder 16 with Richard Tobin, watched the proceed- ings online.
“The horse beside her
flipped and kicked her legs
and hip, so she had quite
a little experience,” said
Maher. “They unloaded, and that horse (Getit Hot) was scratched. They reloaded,
and she just took off and put
it on them. Luckily, it didn’t break through the Vetrap on
her legs, so she didn’t get cut up.”
Berkley Packer piloted Lynnder 16 in the 400-yard Distaff. Lynnder 16 won by a half- length in :19.666 as the 9-5 favorite.
“She broke about a 1/2-length behind The Polar Vortex in the one-hole and then ran
by her,” said Maher. “At the end of the race, she had her ears pricked, so she was feeling comfortable.”
Jason Olmstead and his wife, Amber, have trained and cared for Lynnder 16 her entire career. Olmstead broke her, and the 4-year-old filly has won the 2018 Remington Park Oklahoma Bred Futurity-G2, 2019 Paragon Oaks, and 2020 Ruidoso Downs and Canterbury Park Distaff Challenge Stakes.
Maher said that Lynnder 16 was being shipped to Los Alamitos for further racing this year. The partners hope to
pull two embryos from her and continue racing her in 2021.
Jim and Marilyn Helzer bred Lynnder 16 in Oklahoma from deceased Tinys Corona
Queen. The mare has produced 14 winners from 16 starters, including stakes winners Apollitical Man, Hardtoget, Rattle N Battle, First Of 15, and Reacher.
Jr Prissys Blood (Apollitical Blood-Prissy
B Panther), owned by Ron Moosman and
trained by his son, Riley, was second with Jesus Valenzuela up. Loco Ocho (The Louisiana Cartel- Sign Of Pride), bred by Les & Darla Barlow
and owned by Darla Barlow and the Estate of
Les Barlow, was third. Mauro Salcedo rode the 4-year-old filly for trainer Garth Blattner.
Completing the field were The Polar Vortex (Carters Cartel-Signs Zoomer), El Oh El (Apollitical Jess-Cute Ivory Girl), Splendid Cause (Apollitical Jess-Answer The Dream), Lovely Cuvee (Tres Seis-Fovee), and Fosse (Foose-Check N Fetch). Duck Dash N Go and Getit Hot were scratched.
