Top Deck has four crosses to Broomstick by Ben Brush, all through daughters of Broomstick.
River Boat, the dam of Top Deck. Chicaro’s dam, Wendy, is out of Remembrance by Broomstick. The fourth shot of Broomstick came from his daughter Shady, the fourth dam of Top Deck. Thus, Top Deck has four crosses to Broomstick by Ben Brush, all through daughters of Broomstick.
Broomstick is the sire of Whisk Broom II. This stallion is the next link in our look at the influence of Ben Brush. Whisk Broom II was foaled in 1907 and he was a success- ful racehorse winning 10 of 26 starts and finishing second in seven starts and third one time. He was the winner of the New York Handicap Triple Crown with wins
in the Metropolitan Handicap, Brooklyn Handicap and Suburban Handicap. He raced in England and the United States and won the Prince of Wales Stakes in England.
Whisk Broom II takes us to Direct Win, who is found in the pedigrees of horses like Dash For Cash and Streakin Six. Direct Win is by With Regards by Jack High by John P. Grier by Whisk Broom II. John P. Grier is out of Wonder, who is by Disguise by Domino. Thus, we have the Ben Brush/Domino nick again.
The Porter, by Sweep, sired Time Maker, who sired Time Supply. Time Supply is the sire of Gold Dream, the dam of Direct Win. The third dam of Direct Win is Glyn. This mare is by Delhi, a son of Ben Brush. Direct Win is the sire of La Galla Win. This mare is the second dam of Rocket Wrangler, the sire of Dash For Cash. Streakin Six is out of Miss Assured who is out of Assured who is by Direct Win. The dam of Assured is Sally Rand V by Joe Reed P-3.
So, now let’s add Joe Reed P-3 to the scheme of things. Joe Reed P-3 is the sire of Joe Reed II and Little Fanny. When Joe Reed II and Little Fanny were crossed, they got
Leo. Joe Reed P-3 is by Joe Blair by Bonnie Joe, who is out of Bonnie Rose by Bonnie Scotland. Ben Brush is by Bramble by Bonnie Scotland. Domino is out of Mannie Gray by Enquirer, and Mannie Gray is out of Lizzie
G. Bonnie Joe is by Faustus by Enquirer and Faustus is out of Lizzie G. Thus, Mannie Gray, the dam of Domino, and Faustus, the sire of Bonnie Joe, were full brother and sister.
The sire of Domino is Himyar by Alarm. The dam of Ben Brush is Roseville, who is out of Albia by Alarm. Thus, Alarm appears in the pedigree of Domino and Ben Brush. Another common ancestor between these stallions is Lexington, who appears in both of these pedigrees.
So now that we have established the Ben Brush/Domino nick that comes through these horses, we have to ask—what makes these bloodlines work so well with each other? The answer may come in the form of the common ancestors, as we have found as many of the successful nicks have common ancestors between the two individuals like we have seen in this set of horses.
Before we continue, let’s look at the pedigree of Top Deck again. We see he has
a breeding pattern of 3x4 to Man O’ War, a son of Fair Play by Hastings. So Top Deck has a 4x4 breeding pattern to Peter Pan by Commando by Domino and a breeding pat- tern of 4x4x5x5 to Broomstick by Ben Brush. As you will see, the combination of Domino, Ben Brush and Hastings is fairly common.
SPY SONG
Spy Song has had an interesting influ- ence on the American Quarter Horse and we see some of that influence through three stallions in Hempen, Master Hand and Vikingson. Spy Song is the broodmare sire for these three stallions.
Spy Song is a 1943 stallion bred by Charles T. Fisher at his Dixiana Stud. Spy Song made 36 starts racing from 1945 to 1948 and raced at several distances, but was best as a sprinter. He won the Arlington Futurity at six furlongs and also set a New Track Record at Hawthorne going 4.5 furlongs in :53-4/5 on dirt. At three, Spy Song won the Hawthorne Sprint Handicap at 6-furlongs in a New Track Record time
of 1:16-4/5 and was second in the Kentucky Derby that year. He had his most success- ful year in 1947 when he won four stakes races, including the Chicago Handicap at 7-furlongs, Myrtlewood at 6-furlongs, Clang Handicap at 7-furlongs and the Hawthorne Speed Handicap at 6-furlongs. He was second in three more stakes that year with one third. Spy Song was only stakes placed in two stakes in 1948 in the Vosburgh Handicap and the Clang Handicap, both at 7-furlongs. The colt had 15 wins with nine seconds and four thirds earning $206,325.
Spy Song retired to stud duty at Dixiana Stud and became a noted juvenile sire. He was the leading American juvenile sire in 1955 and was 10th in the American general sire list in 1961. This was his best year as far as sire lists. Spy Song sired 348 foals with 249 winners and 28 stakes horses. Among his leading stakes horses we find Crimson Satan, who had 59
