Hempen was a noted sprinter that started 20 times winning 11 races, second twice and third once earning $108,808. He won four stakes including the Olympia Handicap at 6 1/2-furlongs where he set a New Track Record in a time of 1:15, the San Miquel Stakes
at 6-furlongs, the SNARO Handicap at 6 1/2-furlongs and the Midwest Handicap at 6 1/2-furlongs. He also won several allowance races including a 6-furlong race at Laurel Race Course by 12-lengths as a 2 year old.
Hempen retired to a stud career that has both Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred start- ers. His Thoroughbred foals earned $3,590,882 with 15 stakes horses from 243 foals with 200 starters. One of his leading money earners in the Thoroughbred ranks is Annihilate Em who earned $237,111 and won such races as the Breeders’ Futurity and the Travers Stake-G1.
The Quarter Horse sire record for Hempen shows that he sired earners of $7,348,024.50 from 655 starters with 40 stakes winners. His
 leading money earner is Rise N High win-
ner of $522,075 with wins in races like the
Los Alamitos Invitational Championship-G1, Horsemen’s QHRA Championship-G1, the Sophomore Handicap-G2 and the Z. Wayne Griffin Director’s Stakes-G3. Rise N High was named the 1984 Champion 3-Year-Old Gelding.
The daughters of Hempen made him a leading broodmare sire with their foals earn- ing $15,409,754. This includes 907 ROM and 79 stakes winners. Separatist is the lead- ing money earner from this set of runners. He earned $889,044 and was named the 1999 Champion 2-Year-Old Colt and the 2000 Champion 3 Year Old and Champion 3-Year-Old Colt. Separatist is now a lead- ing sire of money earners with earnings
of $25,065,696. The dam of Separatist, Separate Ways, is an AQHA Dam of Distinction and a Broodmare of the Year.
Hempes Folly is a 2-time stakes winning daughter of Hempen. She won the 1987 Easily Smashed Derby and 1986 Robert
 Strickland Memorial Futurity. She is the dam of Dashing Folly, the 1996 World Champion as well as the 1996 Champion 3 Year Old and 3-Year-Old Filly and the 1997 Champion Aged Horse. Dashing Folly is
the dam of Dashin Follies an unplaced race mare that has become an important pro- ducer. She is the dam of 24 ROM, includ- ing three stakes winners: PYC Paint Your Wagon, Mi Angela and Folly N Dash. PYC Paint Your Wagon is a leading money earner with his big wins in the 2005 Texas Classic Futurity-G1 and the 2006 Texas Classic Derby-G1. He is also the sire of horses that have won $36,792,046. His leading money earner is Papaws Paint, winner of Rainbow Derby-G1 and Hobbs America Futurity-G2. Dashin Follies is also the dam of Ivory James who is a leading sire with his foals earning $17,737,624. His leading money earner is Instygator, who was second in the 2020 All American Futurity-G1 and he was third in the 2020 Heritage Place Futurity-G1.
