Now let’s look at the pedigree of Hempen. He is sired by Indian Hemp, a son of Nasrullah. The dam of Hempen is Serry by Spy Song. The dam of Serry is Santa Roseanna by Rosemont by The Porter by Sweep (Ben Brush- Pink Domino, Domino). Rosemont is out of Garden Rose by Colin by Commando by Domino. The dam
of Santa Roseanna is Sandury by War Admiral by Man O’ War by Fair Play by Hastings. War Admiral was out of Brushup by Sweep. The dam of Sandury is Minnant by Pennant by Peter Pan. This gives the pedigree of Serry the following breeding patterns: 4x4x5 Peter Pan; 5x5x6 Ben Brush; 4x4 Man O’ War; and 5x6x6 Hastings, the grandsire of Man O’ War.

Forgive Him is the dam of Southern California Derby-G1 winner Forget It and Holiday Handicap winner She Forgives.
Jetsetting Girl, by Master Hand, is the winner of two races and $3,855. She is the dam of 20 to race with 16 ROM. She is the dam of Governor’s Cup Futurity-RG2
winner Fixin To Fly, California
Breeders’ Sophomore Stakes-RG3 winner Bridlewood and Golden State Derby-G1 winner Girls Secret.
Jetsetting Girl and Making Up are full sisters by Master Hand and out
of Jet Together by Jet Deck. They are half-sisters to Separate Ways, the dam of Separatist, who is by Hempen and out of Jet Together.
The pedigree of Master Hand fol-
lows that of Hempen in that he is by
Bold Ruler by Nasrullah, making him a grandson of Nasrullah just like Indian Hemp. Annaly, the dam of Master Hand, gets her shot of Peter Pan, Ben Brush and Hastings from her sire. Her dam gives her another shot of Domino blood through her dam Miss Zippy, who is out of Fairisk by Stimulus, who is a son of Ultimus, who is by Commando by Domino and out of Running Stream by Domino.
VIKINGSON TB
Vikingson is a 1968 stallion that was like Master Hand in that he was also stakes placed. He was stakes placed with a second in the Paso Robles Handicap and a third in the Bay District Handicap. He started 16 races with three wins, two seconds and six thirds earning $24,133. Vikingson had run 6-furlongs in 1:09 at Golden Gate Fields with a time of 21 flat for the quarter and the half in :42 4/5.

ing Las Golondrinas Handicap winner Valhalla Express. As a Quarter Horse

286 ROM and 18 stakes winners. His leading money earner is Viking Anne, winner of 10 stakes races including the Pap Handicap (Twice) and the Bull Rastus Handicap (Twice). Viking Anne is now
an AQHA Dam of Distinction with four stakes winners with earnings of $827,734. Her four stakes winners were Wicked Dash, Wicked Willa, Wicked Win and Strictly Wicked.

of horses that have won $5,371,740. His leading money earner is JM Miracle, win- ner of the 2014 All American Futurity-G1.
The pedigree of Vikingson is a little dif- ferent than what we saw with Hempen and Master Hand. He is sired by Viking Spirit by To Market, a son of Market Wise by Broker’s Tip by Black Toney by Peter Pan. The dam of Viking Spirit is True Trick by Chance Play by Fair Play by Hastings. The dam of True Trick is True Flier by Pennant by Peter Pan. The dam of True Flier is Ruth Law by Broomstick by Ben Brush.
We have already gone over Spy Song’s pedigree, so we will look at the dam of Secret Port, the dam of Vikingson. Her dam is Port Darling by Port Au Prince, who is out of Hauton by High Time, who has a breeding patten of 3x3x2 to Domino. The dam of Port Darling is Darkling by Macaw by Peter Pan. This gives Vikingson a breeding pattern of 6x5x5x5x5 to Peter Pan when we add in the Peter Pan blood in Spy Song.
When I did my first story on Vikingson in a 1986 Speedlines, I interviewed David Graham of Southwest Stallion Station. David made an observa- tion about Vikingson and his ties to Spy Song. Graham professed that he thought it was the dam side of Vikingson’s pedigree that, “appealed to Quarter Horse breed- ers.” He backed that thought with using the Thoroughbreds Master Hand and Hempen as examples of successful sires of Quarter Horses that were out of Spy Song mares. You know, I think he was right. And now you know the pedigree side of the contribution.
