Velocidad Classic
BRABUS
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
Always a popular event, this 250-yard classic summoned 12 horses, four years old or older, to compete for a prize of $456,400 pesos (approx. $22,598 US).
Some of them were of proven ability in stakes company, highlighted by Litely Political, Chics Love Curls, The Deadline and SC Mr Sweet Jess. Brabus was also among this group, prepar- ing to exit from the 12-gate. However, his record seemed to encourage few gamblers, as he closed with 15.15 odds to win.
At the start, Egoizzta moved toward SC Mr Sweet Jess, and Alibaba on The Deadline. Then strangely, most of the field looked for the center part of the track, where several of them inter- fered with each other. Only the speed of Litely Political and Chics Love Curls allowed them to fight through the fray and take the lead in the large and disorganized group. However, free of all that traffic, Brabus escaped on the right side of the track, and in the final strides he reached Chics Love Curls (#10) first, then Litely Political (#6) to score the victory. Brabus was ridden by the young jockey Rosalío Alcudia, and set a time of :12.90 for a 100 speed index.
It was a great surprise from Brabus, who dominated the two strongest rivals in the group, as he is a horse whose history is summarized in nine starts on the track (three of them in 2015, five in 2019 and one in 2020). In his early years at the Hipódromo de Las Américas, he qualified for the
finals of the 2015 John Deere Juvenile Challenge, in which he was declared the official winner of the Mexican division after the disqualification of those who arrived in first to fourth place after testing positive for doping, with the filly Fast Prize Robyn being the initial winner of that controversial race.
Brabus represented Mexico
in the finals of the 2015 John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship, which that season was held at Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie, in Texas, but he finished last. Later, he began a successful career in match races in the State of Nuevo León under the name “El Plastiquero,” when he was gelded.
In 2019, he returned to the Hipódromo
de Las Américas, now under the ownership of Cuadra 2 Marías, and although he had not won, he was always in the money.
Raised in the United States, Brabus is by Ivory James and out of the Royal Quick Dash mare No Ordinary Dash, a winner of three races and one second place in 8 starts with earnings of $28,170 in the United States.
Since November 2019, Gonzalo Bastida and his training team have been in charge of the athletic conditioning of Brabus, teaming up with his new stable, headed by José Gómez.
Dedication and commitment, as well as the class of the horse, paid off this day, with the support and saddling of Nicolás Otamendi. $228,200 pesos (approx. $11,299 US) were credited to his earnings account for this win.
Second place at the finish- line went to Litely Political (Apollitical Jess-Strobe), who
was ridden by Yair Daniel Báez Soto, adding points and earnings to Cuadra San Judas Tadeo, as well as trainer Víctor Jarillo Sánchez, who was responsible for saddling the mare.
The always seasoned Chics Love Curls (Spit Curl Jess-First Prize Chic) took third place with José Manuel Cisneros in the stirrups. The stal- lion is part of the Díaz de León Cuadra and was saddled by Saúl Pérez Robredo.
The other participants crossed the finish line in the following order: The Deadline (Favorite Cartel– Flying Regal), Shazam B (Freighttrain B–Sheza Lilbituino), Alibaba (Corona Cartel–This Lady Likes Cash), Elite Dynasty (FDD Dynasty–Teller Yep), SC Mr Sweet Jess (One Sweet Jess–Built For Fun), DC Radio Flyer (PYC Paint Your Wagon– MS Dashin Bigtime), WL Shez To Fantastic (Fantastic Corona–Shez Quick To Ramble), Regal Cartelista (Millenium Cartel–Regalista) and Egoizzta (Ragazzo–Kacy Red).
