Mexican Bred Derby Challenge
CHISPITA TWO
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
In the four qualifying races for the first Mexican Bred Derby Challenge, the first trials of the season, 34 three-year-old individuals of
Mexican upbringing participated. The fastest 10 at 350 yards advanced to the next stage
to compete for a purse of $1,088,800 pesos (approx. $53,911 US) on March 8.
It was a competitive group, led by Corona Sola, who registered :17.044, teaming up with her partner Chispita Two, positioned with the eighth best time of :17.255 and the filly who took first place two weeks later in the finals.
In addition to this coupled entry, two more cuadras placed a couple of runners in the finals: Rancho Las Gaviotas with RG Onchao A
King and RG Valentine O Toole, and the 21 Partnership with Hot Dragon and Let Them Play. However, it was the runners mentioned in the previous paragraph who were the preference at the betting windows, closing with a odds of 0.75.
Overall it was a clean race: only at the start was the delay of RG Valentine O Toole and LA Whistlin Corona, and the slight contact they had with a neighboring competitor. It was also observed that GS As De Bastos drifted towards the inside of the track, pressuring RG Onchao A King and almost colliding with the rail, forc- ing him to shorten his stride and stop his race.
For her part, Chispita Two left cleanly and timely from the 9-gate and freely showed her
power, ridden by José Ángel
Ambrosio Medina. Only at
the end did Hot Dragon close
hard and approach her near
the wire, but Chispita Two
dominated by 1/2-length,
stopping the clock at :17.21
seconds for a 94 speed index
and improving her qualifying
time by .04 hundredths of a
second. In this way, Chispita
Two further endorsed the
earning of her title as 2019
Champion Mexican Two-Year-Old Filly, which was awarded by the Mexican Quarter Horse Association, after she won the Mexican Breeders Futurity and finished second in the Selecta Auction Futurity.
The diminutive black filly earned her 8th win and second classic in 11 starts on the track. Her reward was $457,296 pesos (approx. $22,642 US), bringing her total earnings to more than 2.7 million pesos.
A breeding product of Cuadra La Presita, she is by Danny Cartel, a leading stallion
in Mexico, and out of La Tonita by Mr Eye Opener. Chispita Two is owned by Rancho El Suspiro, whose main members participated in the award’s ceremony, with Juan Baldovinos Jr. in charge. The filly is trained by José
Guadalupe García and was saddled by Liderme René Gómez Díaz.
The gelding Hot Dragon (Zulu Dragon-Marjale Goes Hot) also moved well on the right side of the track, captur- ing second place under the guidance of José Luis Santos. He was raised and is owned by the Rancho 21 Partnership and was also saddled by Liderme René Gómez Díaz.
The surprising Mr Eagle Famous (Jabuti Eagle-Jess Easy Takin), who was the least favor- ite of all at odds of 20.60, captured third place well led by Aarón Adrián Gómez. The gelding was raised by Ramón Domínguez Pérez, is owned by Cuadra LOBA and trained by José Ravel Baltazar Aguilar.
The other finalists concluded thus: Corona Sola (Senior Solo–Corona Dot Com), GS
As De Bastos (Taint Your Wagon–Louisiana Dana), Let Them Play (Zulu Dragon–La Mona Liza), RG Valentine O Toole (Gol–Tempting Politics), Casandra Native GC (Native Jewel DH–Summer Hawk Makela), RG Onchao A King (RG Golden King–Corona Lady Dos) and LA Whistlin Corona (Corona Silver– Whistlin Runaway).
