Kaweah Bar Handicap-G3
CHOCOLATITO
by Tracy Gantz
Chocolatito hadn’t raced since December, but that didn’t keep the 4-year-old gelding from the Los Alamitos winner’s circle. He defeated a talented field
in the $35,000 Kaweah Bar Handicap-G3 on May 2. With regular rider Vinnie Bednar in the saddle,
Chocolatito went off as the 17-10 favorite in the 350-yard Kaweah Bar. He broke fifth and hustled
up during the last part of the race to score by a head in :17.399, posting a 101 speed index. The $19,250 winner’s share of the purse boosted the gelding’s total lifetime earnings to $101,585.
Scott Willoughby trains Chocolatito for owner Dr. Ed Allred. Chocolatito won the Dillingham Handicap and finished second in the PCQHRA Breeders Derby-G3 last year.
“He is just getting better every time,” said Willoughby. “He loves the distance.”
Dr. Steve Burns bred Chocolatito and sold him to Allred for $50,000 at the 2017 Los Alamitos Equine Sale. Chocolatito is out of the Burns home- bred graded stakes winner Enjoy The Walk. The mare has produced 100% money earners from eight starters, including stakes winner Eagles Soar.
John Cooper trains second-place Alamode (Kiddy Up-Pie Maid) and owns the 5-year-old gelding in partnership with his wife, Carol. Cruz Mendez piloted Alamode, who was coming off a vic- tory in the Mr Jet Moore Handicap.
Eduardo Nicasio rode Tac Me Up (Kiddy Up-Tacatrina) to third for owners Ruth Barbour and Colten and Wendy O’Dell and trainer Christopher O’Dell. Tac Me Up won the 2020 Cypress Handicap and 2018 Autumn Handicap.
My Favorite Cartel (Favorite Cartel-Chicks Tell), Cartel Rocks (Five Bar Cartel-Snow Rock), Rite Quick (Favorite Cartel-Iba Quick Chick) and Chicks Fayvorite (Favorite Cartel-Chicks Tell) completed the order of finish.
Wheatland Handicap
RULE HE WILL TB
by Tracy Gantz
Some horses just don’t like retirement. The Thoroughbred Rule He Will is much happier when he’s competing in races, which he proved by capturing the $20,000 Wheatland Handicap against mixed company at Los Alamitos on April 18.
“He was in a pasture last year, and he wasn’t
the same,” said Jerry Wallace II, who trains Rule He Will for owner William Branch. “As soon as he started training again, he was a happier horse.”
With Ramon Guce in the irons for the 870-yard Wheatland, Rule He Will vied for the early lead and then drew out to dominate. At the wire, he finished 3 1/2-lengths in front, getting the distance in :44.707 and posting a 99 speed index. The $11,000 winner’s share improved the gelding’s bankroll to $103,801.
Rule He Will, now 9, won the 2018 Truly A Pleasure Handicap and Snowbound Superstar Handicap, both at Los Alamitos. He has won eight of 11 starts at Los Alamitos and two races at Santa Anita.
The late Kjell Qvale bred Rule He Will out
of unraced Sonoma Bred. She has produced two Thoroughbred foals, both winners. The third dam, Love Conquers All, was a multiple stakes winner who earned $149,783.
Efrain Hernandez piloted Love Your Life TB (Ministers Wild Cat-It’s Your Life) to second for owners Albert Gonzaz and Antonio Mojarro and trainer Lorenzo Ruiz. Love Your Life’s most recent victory came in an allowance race at Los Alamitos on Jan. 17. Edward Freeman owns and trains third-place Hardcore Troubador TB (Roi Charmant-Farallon) with Vinnie Bednar on board. Hardcore Troubador won the 2018 KLAQ Handicap at Sunland Park.
Biddy Duke TB (Bayern-Ghostslayer), C Dub TB (Hard Spun-Warbling), Sokudo TB (Salute The Sarge-Beauallis), and Loan Sharky (Parsons Rock-Lil Sharky) completed the order of finish. Run Raging Rhino Run was scratched.
