DO YOU NEED TO REGISTER A HORSE WITH THE NEW MEXICO HORSE BREEDERS ASSOCIATION?
HERE ARE SOME GUIDELINES TO FOLLOW
• You must be a current member to register any horses. Do this early in the year so you don’t miss out on an issue of our magazine. All memberships expire December 31st of every year. However, we start accepting memberships for the next year on November 1st. All forms can be found on our website at www.nmhorsebreeders.com or we will be happy to email, fax or mail you what you need.
• Fill out the ENTIRE New Mexico Bred application, front and back. If you don’t know the answer to a question, PLEASE FIND OUT. IF THE APPLICATION IS INCOMPLETE IT WILL BE SENT BACK TO YOU TO FINISH BEFORE WE CAN REGISTER AND STAMP YOUR HORSE PAPERS.
• Pay the correct fee. Remember all horses age on January 1st and the fees go up as they age. 1. Weanling fee is $60.00.
2. Yearling fee is $150.00.
3. Two-year old fee is $1,000.00.
4. Three-year old and up are $2,000.00.
• Know who the sire and dam are and have the correct spelling of their names.
• On the back of the New Mexico Bred application, we ask if the semen was transported, and if so, where was it sent. Please
fill in this information if applicable.
• Was the semen transported? If so, it needs to be stated on both the horse’s papers and our application.
• Please use an Embryo Transfer application (form 100A) if the horse is an Embryo Transfer. Both the Donor Mare and the Recipient Mare must be registered with us. We need to know who both mares are and where they were kept during the pregnancy.
• If the Broodmare (Donor or Recipient) leaves the state of NM to board elsewhere, there are special forms which need to be completed. There is a fee of $500.00 to be paid no later than October 1st of the breeding year.
• If a pregnant broodmare remains in New Mexico and then leaves after the October 1st deadline, you will have 10 days to get the payment and form into the office. Remember, they must be bred in New Mexico and come back to New Mexico to foal. We do require a Broodmare in Foal Returning to the State of New Mexico form to be submitted prior to foaling.
• You don’t need to wait to have the registration papers on the horse to start the New Mexico Bred registration process. You can fill out the application as unnamed and pay the fee before the horse ages and the fee goes up.
• Your horse is not a New Mexico Bred until the registration paper/certificate has been stamped and assigned a New Mexico Bred number. Send us your Quarter Horse registration papers when you get them so we can stamp them New Mexico Bred. Also, let us know when your Thoroughbred’s certificate has been completed online by the Jockey Club so we can stamp them New Mexico Bred.
• When registering a Broodmare, we need a copy of her papers. For recipient mares which have never been papered, we need four photos (front, back, left and right sides). The fee to register your broodmare is $100.00. New Mexico Bred racehorse fillies need to be registered as broodmares in the NM Broodmare registry if she is being bred for New Mexico Bred foals. The Broodmare registry deadline is September 1st of the year bred. Once registered as a New Mexico Broodmare, it is for life.
• When registering a Stallion, make sure you have the official negative EVA test results from a laboratory and an EVA Certificate filled out by your veterinarian. We need a copy of his papers, a completed stallion registration form, and the $400.00 registration fee. New Mexico Bred racehorse colts need to be registered as stallions in the NM Stallion registry if he is being bred for NM Bred foals.
